Apple moves private email features to private.icloud.com this summer

Apple is merging the email domains used for its Sign in with Apple and iCloud+ Hide My Email features. Starting later this summer, all new addresses generated by both privacy tools will use a single private.icloud.com domain. This change simplifies the infrastructure that previously split these services across separate Apple ID and iCloud domains.

Key details

  • Sign in with Apple addresses will move from the privaterelay.appleid.com domain.
  • iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will move from the standard icloud.com domain.
  • Legacy addresses using the old domains will remain active and continue to forward mail normally.
  • Developers and email service providers must update validation logic and allowlists to support the new domain.

Why it matters

This consolidation shifts the technical maintenance burden to developers and email service providers, who must now update account systems, domain-based filtering, and suppression lists to prevent legitimate private addresses from being flagged as invalid. While users do not need to take any action, the move signals Apple’s desire to unify its privacy-focused masking services under the iCloud brand specifically. This forces third-party platforms to recognize a broader range of Apple-generated aliases, ensuring that users who rely on these privacy tools do not face friction when signing up for apps or websites. It also streamlines Apple’s identity management by separating standard user emails from those generated by its relay systems.
