AcuRite delays May 30 shutdown of its legacy weather app

Smart weather-monitoring firm AcuRite postponed its mandatory migration to the new AcuRite NOW companion app. The company originally planned to shut down its legacy My AcuRite service on May 30 but paused the transition following feedback from long-time users. Jeff Bovee, AcuRite’s VP of product development, stated the move raised serious questions and concerns among customers.

Key details

  • The AcuRite NOW app, which launched in June 2025, was designed to replace the legacy software for rain gauges, thermometers, and weather stations.
  • Users identified several missing features in the new version, including an online dashboard and the ability to view temperatures in non-integers.
  • Long-time customers reported issues with data uploads to weather sites and the inability to rename multiple temperature sensors.
  • The company has not yet provided a new date for when the legacy service will eventually be deactivated.

Why it matters

Hardware companies often face friction when attempting to streamline software by moving users from feature-rich legacy platforms to mobile-first apps. By delaying the shutdown, AcuRite is acknowledging that for specialized hobbyists, aesthetic updates cannot replace functional data tools like web dashboards. This situation signals that IoT vendors risk alienating their most dedicated users if software migrations prioritize platform consolidation over the core utility of the physical device. Watch to see if AcuRite restores the online dashboard before attempting another forced migration.
